It took Cincinnati resident K.
A. Simpson nearly a decade to reach his book release party. On May 21st,
50 of his closest friends and family infiltrated Below Zero Lounge at the corner
of 12th and Walnut in Over-the-Rhine. For most it was the first glimpse of K.A. as
a writer. It was a big success to be followed by his 2nd book
signing, just over a month later on June 28 at Urban Eden at 1313 Main.
Chronicles of a Boy
Misunderstood is a dissection of relationships via a series of 3
"chronicles" (novellas), depicting the struggles that gay African
American men face living in America.
Chronicle 1: The Elliot and Paul
Lee Story
Northern Kentucky in the late 1800’s was a bustling
area sprawling with a healthy mix of urban development and rural upbringing.
Paul Lee, a middle aged store keep, was typical of the time; by selling his
small farm, and moving to the city to make a living. In attempts to look
towards the future, in selling his farm, he freed the slaves that he owned and
employed one of his former slave L.D. at his store in the city.
When Paul Lee hires a new helping hand, what he
knew about sexuality is thrown out of the window and he is thrust into the
complicated situation of trying to figure out what true love really is.
Chronicle 2: Ten to One
With his newly unfurled
diploma framed and hanging above the mantle in his new apartment, Jacob
Thompson is about to begin his adult life in a major way. In trying to come to out as a gay man to his
ultra-conservative, relatives during the midst of a family tragedy, Jacob
uncovers a murder plot that has been over twenty years in the planning, and
must save the last victim before it is too late.
Chronicle 3: Love vs. War
A lonely and
confused gay boy from Covington, Kentucky attempts to leave the confines of his
city by joining the Army. Only to find
out that his secret love has followed him there as well.
